Artistic Staff for A Chorus Line:

 

PATTI D’BECK (Director/Choreographer) is very happy to return to PTC for her thirteenth production, most recently choreographing My Fair Lady, The Producers, Paint Your Wagon and Chicago for PTC. Her Broadway credits include Annie Get Your Gun, starring Bernadette Peters, and later Reba McEntire, Bells Are Ringing, Grease and The Will Rogers Follies, working with people such as Jeff Calhoun, Graciela Daniele, Tommy Tune and Michael Bennett. She has appeared on Broadway in 13 shows including A Chorus Line, Evita and My One and Only. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Theatre Department at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, where she teaches Movement for the Actor, and Musical Theatre.


 

MICHAEL HORSLEY (Musical Director) conducted the Boston, Toronto and Detroit companies of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas as well as the St. Louis MUNY production where he is resident music director. He conducted the national tours of Thoroughly Modern Millie, 42nd Street, Cinderella, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Chicago (starring Chita Rivera and Ben Vereen). He also conducted the Broadway company of Chicago. He is music director for the Theatre Guild’s Sail With The Stars and arranges/conducts for Donna McKechnie, Lee Roy Reams, Shirley Jones, and Lucie Arnaz. Regional credits include Music Theatre Wichita, American MusicTheatre of San Jose and PaperMill Playhouse.


 

ROBERT TUNSTALL (Assistant to the Director/Choreographer) is thrilled to be assisting one of his favorite Broadway dancers: Ms. Patti D’Beck! He began his journey with A Chorus Line in 1996 as a swing (Bobby/Mark/Don) on the European Tour for Troy Garza. He then graduated to the role of “Bobby” on the North American tour for original cast member Baayork Lee. You can catch a glimpse of him in the new documentary film Every Little Step which follows the audition process for the recent revival of A Chorus Line on Broadway. Robert is currently on faculty at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts where he teaches Movement for the Actor. In his spare time, he enjoys writing for www.AChorusLine.org.


 

STEVEN BARLOW (Accompanist) has performed as a pianist for Pioneer Theatre Company since 1991, starting with their production of Sunday in the Park with George. He has accompanied over 30 shows at PTC including all 81 performances of Les Misérables. Steven also conducted PTC’s productions of Smokey Joe’s Café and James Joyce’s The Dead. Steven has been musical director at Egyptian Theatre Company, Weber State University and Rodgers Memorial Theatre and is happy to be back performing in A Chorus Line.


 

GEORGE MAXWELL (Scenic Designer) is the resident scenic designer for PTC. He recently designed Miss Saigon. Favorite PTC designs include Chicago, Les Misérables, Metamorphoses, Enchanted April, The Importance of Being Earnest, West Side Story, Proof, Peter Pan, Noises Off, Man of La Mancha and Ain’t Misbehavin’. He has designed the sets for Utah Opera Company’s The Coronation of Poppea and The Ballad of Baby Doe and 21 productions for the Utah Shakespearean Festival. He also designed Death of a Salesman and The Count of Monte Cristo for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. George is a member of United Scenic Artists. SUSAN BRANCH TOWNE (Costume Designer) returns to PTC after designing My Fair Lady, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Chicago, Julius Caesar, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Smokey Joe’s Café, Macbeth, Tartuffe, Sophisticated Ladies, King Lear, and Richard III. Among her New York credits are Griffelkin for New York City Opera and the Off-Broadway productions of Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh!, She Loves Me, Fortinbras and Two Gentlemen of Verona. Local audiences may know her work from the Utah Shakespearean Festival, where she designed during the 1996-1999 seasons. Other regional engagements include Denver Center Theatre Company, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Virginia Stage Company, Skylight Opera Theatre, Lake George Opera Festival, New Jersey Shakespeare Festival and numerous theatres in her home city, Austin, Texas. Susan is a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University and the Yale School of Drama and a member of United Scenic Artists, Local 829.


 

MICHAEL GILLIAM (Lighting Designer) Broadway credits include: Brooklyn, Big River and Stand-Up Tragedy. The West End credits: Gershwin Alone. Off-Broadway: Striking 12, Blue, End of the World Party, Zooman and the Sign, and Menopause The Musical. National tours include: Brooklyn, Guys and Dolls, and Big River. Regional: Arena Stage, The Globe Theatres, Mark Taper Forum, Seattle Repertory, The Goodman Theatre, The Guthrie Theater, The Pasadena Playhouse, The Geffen Playhouse, The Kennedy Center, Ford’s Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company, The Prince Music Theatre, Denver Center and Arizona Theatre Company.  Awards: Los Angeles Ovation Award, Drama-Logue Award, Garland Award and the 1999 Career Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle.


 

JOE PAYNE (Sound Designer) is in his tenth season as Resident Sound Designer for Pioneer Theatre Company and teaching sound design for the Department of Theatre at the U of U. He has designed sound and/or composed music for more than 100 productions in theatres throughout the country, including Utah Shakespearean Festival (ten years), Indiana Repertory Theatre, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Salt Lake Shakespeare, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, The Virginia Stage Company (four years), Egyptian Theatre Company, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Utah Opera, The Fulton Opera House, and Utah Musical Theater. Joe is a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829.


 

AMANDA FRENCH (Hair and Make-up Designer) has been a Makeup and Hair Designer for over 20 years. She has worked for Utah Shakespearean Festival, The Utah Opera, Egyptian Theatre Company and the University of Texas at Austin. She is a contributing writer in the ninth edition of Stage Makeup by Richard Corson and James Glavan and her work can also be seen in The Costume Technician’s Handbook by Rosemary Ingham and Liz Covey. She attended the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati where she studied with Hair and Makeup designer Lenna Kaleva.
